A common misconception about the Smash Tournament was that all competitors are housed together as roommates - while there is a 'Smash Village', individual housing is provided. Over time, some are elected to live together for various reasons, the chief among those being simply for company.

In the wild, Pikachus are a prey pokemon and while Pikachu himself is unaware of what that entails, he simply can't sleep well unless there's somebody close by (hence his occasional naps after winning a brawl). So he's a frequent visitor to other smashers homes. The younger fighters, such as Ness, Lucas, Villiager and Toon Link, are often happy to let him drop by for a snooze as are his fellow Pokemon fighters, although they don't quite understand his desire for company while he sleeps.

At most of these homes Pikachu will kip on a provided cushion, pile of blanekts, sofa or on some straw. The main exception is with, who else, but Samus Aran. At her home he often curls up at the end of her bed or on a provided pet bed, though he will pout and be cross if the word 'pet bed' is used.

Most of the fighters in the Smash Tournament became heroes before being recruited into it's illustrious roster of competitors. Yet, despite being a household name, that is not so when it comes to Pikachu.

During the second Grand Summoning Tournament, an event where new fighters are called to join the world and customs of Smash, an egg was ordered and delivered from the Pokemon world. This egg contained what was meant to be a guest fighter, only to appear in that 'season' of Smash and then to be let go. Of course, it hatched into a Pichu. Raised within the tournament, Pichu never knew the ways of Pokemon battles. He had to learn to fight for himself without the advice of a trainer, his only teachers being defeat, victory and the Pikachu who'd joined Smash from the very beginning. Lightweight and unable to control his own electricity, it was clear that he was always at a disadvantage in any battle. Yet still the Pichu fought repeatedly, never hesitanting to step into the battlefield. While young, his heart already burned with vigor and a fighting spirit equal to those heroes he fought against. It was shortly before the third Grand Summoning Tournament that Pichu evolved. The Pikachu who'd come before him congratulated him and returned to the Pokemon world, to live as he had before. Since then, Pikachu has taken part in the Third Summoning Tournament, the defeat of the Subspace Invasion and the fourth Summoning Tournament.

Being born and raised in a no-holds bar fighting arena, Pikachu is very different from his native species. Able to understand speech and determine his own attack patterns, he's more intelligent and independant than a wild Pokemon. Due to the nature of the Smash Tournaments, the philiosophy of reaching glory and showing one's greatest potentional through battle is firmly ingrained in Pikachu, meaning that he's always eager to battle even if the odds are stacked firmly against him.
